Counterpoint: for a player with low-enough skill, the amount of time you need to "invest" to succeed is enough to induce tedium / make you bored of the content you're grinding. Conversely, for a high-enough skill player, all challenges could be "easy" for the first time, with no grinding at all needed. Which is why you need difficulty levels - "Easy" (which we don't have yet, and should have - Vepar & Zangetsu are too hard at Normal), "Normal", and beefed-up "Hard" and "Nightmare" modes *all unlocked from the start* so that everyone can be happy. Why a "beefed up" Hard and Nightmare mode? I find Hard to be plenty challenging (though I do wish the more dense Hard Mode enemy placements were there on Normal, just with the enemies toned down a bit). Wouldn't it make more sense to either add a "Very Hard" mode, or change Nightmare into a more difficult mode and make the option to disable levelling a separate option? If we're going to be adding a new difficulty anyway, there's no reason to take existing levels of difficulty away. Well, beefed up was just because a lot of people seem to think that Nightmare, in particular, isn't much harder than Hard at the moment. I suggested in another thread that "toggleable difficulty options" (like limiting levels, shard rank and grade, etc etc) would be a good addition for piling on additional challenge, so I think this is a good idea. ("Nightmare" + "your equipment doesn't level either" seems like it should be harder than Nightmare.)

In my opinion none of the Metroidvania titles are difficult.
Yes, there may be the occasional boss that seems difficult at first. But once you identify the pattern, stock up on health items or grind for levels / gear, nothing can really stop you. Bloodstained is no different in that regard.
For a difficult experience one should visit the classic Castlevania's, really.

This is sort of a non-complaint really: any game where you can engage in tedious levelling activities to become more powerful against (non-auto-scaling) enemies can be made "easier" by a trade-off of time/interesting activities against "skill". That doesn't make them "easy", as the base level of challenge is what determines that.

Nightmare in a fresh game is about right if you want a challenge, first boss is BS because she just oneshots you, but after that and maybe 1st Zangetsu it becomes more balanced (you can mess up 2-3 times) while still offering a challenge.
Just don't use dullahead familiar and welcome company, cause these 2 basically play the game for you.

Bloodstained is for the most part harder than SOTN. If you play on hard which I agree should be available from the start it's much harder. The first boss in ROTN is so much harder than Slogra and Gibbon. The way the games are made, being RPG's, make it nearly impossible to be to hard because it all depends on how leveled up you are by the time you get to different places. Inverted Castle was pretty hard but everything before then is a cakewalk in SOTN. Nightmare mode flat out destroys SOTN but it also isn't the same experience since you can't level up.If you do no grinding in ROTN it gets hard even on normal.

I find RotN to be too easy even on hard mode. A "very hard" mode would be good. It's also way too short of a game. Was expecting much more.

I haven't tried nightmare. I don't see how you can progress through the game without gaining levels. Maybe I'm missing something...you were saying that even Hard was too easy and the game would benefit from a very hard mode (which is Nightmare), and you haven't tried it, but you don't see how you can progress in it without gaining levels - insinuating that it is too hard. Is that right? If so...that sounds like Nightmare should be for you the sweet spot for the game otherwise being too easy on hard mode. However, if what you want is a game that is hard and yet works and is balanced for the notion that you don't ever want to level up, that would...probably be Hard itself or you're being very picky about it! What you might also benefit from then is Classic mode when that hits as it would have no leveling at all, but it seems rather like you want something more like SotN's difficulty curve, but that seems contrary too because that game is pretty easy. idk

It's not that the higher difficulties are "easy," it's just that they all end up devolving in to being a glass cannon build that can kill anything in one hit but also die in one hit. It's not interesting. Hard and nightmare would benefit greatly from massively buffed enemy HP.

Though amusingly enough, that's the very thing most repeated beforehand they didn't want to see in harder difficulties. Anything but a "lazy hike in HP values".
It's more or less though inevitable in a game like this - your character will just be too powerful for much of anything else to have a meaningful effect.

I don't like overly tanky enemies so just upping their def and HP to super high levels would only serve to frustrate me.
