Not sure if I like that idea. I really want to hunt down and collect every single shard in the game, so that sounds like a punishment for doing well and having fun. I plan on collecting all shards too. What I meant was that if you have *vast* amounts of shards (ie. 9 in many cases) that are leveled up to their maximum potential then the game could "punish" you in a sense, since you're potentially over-relying on your demon powers.
Regardless of how it's implemented, they have hinted enough in the demo that having too many shards is a bad idea and it would seem silly if there were no consequences.

That makes a little more sense, thanks for clearing it up.

Most of the gothic and horror stories have bittersweet, bleak and unease endings, so I think it's fine if Bloodstained wants to take the dark and gloomy true ending approach.

That makes a little more sense, thanks for clearing it up. We could have a little bit of a compromise, similar to how both Aria & Dawn (Sorrow duology) handled the different endings. What I mean is: Miriam could still collect all of the Shards & end up fine... BUT she either needs a special item (likely to be courtesy of Dominique or Johannes), or she needs to use a specific combination of Shards, to be able to pass a certain checkpoint in the story (which would likely result in the Bad Ending IF you don't do what's required). Gebel, after all, dares Miriam to find out if she can still call herself "human" by the end of all this; so why not find a way to show him that Miriam can do it without succumbing to the curse?

I'm with Galamoth. Unless they scrapped the concept of having too many shards or the slow crawl of your curse, then that's a fine solution.
One of the alternatives is an extreme punishment for normal gameplay with a story line contrivance which forces or causes an ending(Examples such as Undertale or Spec Ops the Line come to mind). I refuse to be punished for playing a metroidvania/Igavania and I highly doubt Iga would do this.

I doubt there'll be only one ending. I'm expecting the standard three. One of them will be the Bad Ending (possibly about Miriam succumbing to her curse), another will be the "Normal" Ending (likely the bittersweet one), and then finally the Good Ending (in which Miriam survives). Heck, there could be more. And we still don't know if the 2nd & 3rd playable characters will be more than extra content; if they could possibly have their own Endings (and story involvement in general). Yeah, we know Zangetsu is involved in the story, but we don't know if we'll see story content when finally playing as him. I think there will be three endings as well. I think there will be a bad ending if you have too many shards, in which case Miriam is overwhelmed and becomes like Gebel while the normal ending will be "okay" but perhaps leave some questions unanswered. I would like it if the best ending required a bit of work similar to Aria of Sorrow whereby you would unlock an extra area with one final boss and a true ending.
SIDE NOTE: Am I the only one who has found the development of this game to be proceeding relatively quickly until the last month or so? It seems like the final home stretch is taking an eternity . I'd be interested to see if collecting all shards gives an unexpected benefit that none of the characters were aware of!

Ehh… I understand why people like bittersweet endings and why they want to see more of them but... It feels like now every gaming writer has to have a "bittersweet at best, downer at worst" outcome for their story nowadays; I mean they're great when done right but- I dunno I'm just a sappy old school gamer who likes to have their heroes leave the adventure with at least a personal victory.
On your question Bloody Miri, depends like I wouldn't be fine if it was something like OoE or, God forbid, Miriam outright dying; I'm not asking for something with rainbow, lollipops, jump-in-the-air-freeze-frame ending. But I would like Miriam to leave the castle feeling like she's accomplished some personal victories. Call me sappy but I just like happy and bitterSWEET ends you know, part of the reason for that being, like dhampir said, escapism. Real life's depressing enough, got no needs to in video games
Now that being said I do especially like it when a darker/heavier story has a good ending makes the victory more satisfying, I wouldn't want it to be Grimdark as I do get "Darkness-induced Audience Apathy" syndrome but that's my personal feeling on the matter
Yan does make a good statement, there will probably be a "bad", "normal", and "good/true" ending in the main game.
But regarding multiple endings, what I am praying to God does not happen is that the bad ending is gotten by having to many shards on your person; Like come don't punish me just because I want to enjoy the to it's fullest extent, I agree with Bloody Miri on that part a LOT.

Yeah I can see that. Bittersweet is one thing, and I do not even mind a MC dying, if written well, but these days people are always shilling grimdark garbage (IMO) like Game of Thrones, where basicly it's "life sucks and then you die" I don't want that, I want Evil was destroyed, and the MC sacrificed herself to make it possible. That sort of thing.

Count me in with that as well. That would be interesting to see- and a bit hellish depending on the shard drop rate. Which makes me hope that new game plus in this game is INFINTE new game plus. I really do not like how some games are including it these days, only to put a limit as to how many times you can do it, thus making it pointless, imo.

I do intend to see as many story related endings as I can in this game, though I do hope some of then are not tied to higher difficulty levels. I don't handle stress very well, sadly.

Sekiro's Purification ending for example: Wolf gives his life so his master could live a happy, normal life, the game puts so much emphasis on how heartwarming it is, that i'd go so far as to say if it weren't for the secret ending feeling like a sequel hook, I could see that as the true ending.

Like, should it end up that way, it needs to play into the lore, not "shes dead, roll credits" Do it Bruce Willis in Armegeddon style, ya know?

Miriam becoming the enemy for the sequel sounds cool to be honest. Other than that, I don't want to think about it too much. It'll be 11 days from now, I just want to be surprised.
ROTN needs to have the "normal ending" in which you play the game normally without trying to 100%. But after the ending, you realize that there is something you missed, so you gotta figure out what's missing. It's prominent in all IGAVania games. My favorite one has to be SOTN's and AOS's. You get to explore the castle, but inverted. The other, you get to explore the realm of Chaos.
