A brief history for me, I started out enjoying Rap, R & B, then onto Metal, Heavy Metal/Rock, Blues, Pop, Mainstream, etc..then I stumbled upon eletronica. From there I went from Trance, Hard Trance/Techno, Drum n Bass/Liquid/Breaks, House/Funky then I ended up at progressive house where I currently stayed at. To me the music is just amazing to listen too because it slowly builds up over time, and every time you listen to it you get something different out of it. It's also a fine way to tune one's ears to various sounds
To start off, I'll link something from the Progressive House genre:
I still listen to the previous genres I posted, just mostly prog house as of late <3 ^_^

I mostly just listen to Japanese and video game music. Right now, I have my trusty Castlevania playlist to help me get through my work day.

As I said in my J-Music post, I devoted into J-rocks.
Other than that I'm pretty omnivorous, R&B, Disco funk, House, Speedcore, Folklore and...
Pop. Love Maroon 5 and Jason Mraz.

I listen to pretty much any genre. I try to avoid listening to anything promoting violence though, that is my main exception. I listen to Bach when cleaning/homework, I listen to electronic music when working out, and I listen to 80s music when I want to jam at home or when I am driving! Oh, and I really like Brandon Flower's music. Very catchy, new wave vibes from him.

EDIT: BTW, SOTN's Prologue is my favorite game music, when you're Richter just before you play as Alucard

I listen to everything except country. As a Texas native, I tried. Just can't dig it. Just off the top of my head, here are some bands that I would recommend for different genres.
Metal- Mudvayne, Hatebreed, Mushroom Head, Pantera
Female Lead Rock- Evanescence, We Are the Fallen, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Ambient Electronic: Aphex Twin
Piano: Dustin O'Halloran, Tori Amos
Japan Metal: Blood Stain Child, BabyMetal
J-Pop: Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
Popular Indi- Modest Mouse, Band of Horses, The Shins, Rogue Wave, Vampire Weekend
Unpopular Indi- The Radio Dept, The Bird and The Bee
Psychedelic Funk- of Montreal (pre 2009)
Nerdcore Rap- Mega Ran, MC Lars, MC Chris, Schaffer the Dark Lord
Rap- Del tha Funky Homosapien
Pirate Rap- Capt. Dan and the Scurvy Crew
Synth Pop- Freezepop
Rock- Pompeya

So I grew up in the early 80's. Born and raise on hair metal, power ballads, and the beginnings of rap and hip hop. (MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, and LL Cool J days). From there I oddly went backwards. In my middle school years I got more interested in 50's, 60's, and 70's rock and classic rock. Little bit of late 70's, 80's, and early 90's country. In my junior high years I got real big into classical music, but about that same time the SNES was hitting its peak and was playing games like Final Fantasy 4 & 6, Chrono Trigger, Arcana, and the like. So I simultaneously got into video game music. As a result I missed out on a lot of the grunge rock and the origins of death, symphonic, and heavy metal. That all changed near the end of my high school years and the beginning of my college years. I got real deep into modern rock and heavy metal, and even deeper into video game music. Also, because of the video game music, I started to get into techno and electronica. More recently I'm still deep in rock, deeper yet in Video Game music, and I'm starting to get into EDM and D&B. Also, in the last 8-10 years I've picked up a taste for bluegrass, and bluegrass rock, as well as a handful (like 1-3) pop bands. About 8 years ago I got and paid for my own first concert ticket to see OneRepublic. I've been to over 500 concerts since then and I haven't looked back. Here's a sample of some of my music. What is quite possibly my ALL TIME FAVORITE music video!!!!!!! (warning its heavy metal) What I would have given to have been a part of that video shoot! And for something completely different. And then there's this. ^_^ And that's a taste of the music I run through...

I have just discovered Smooth Groove recently and I must say this man is really awesome and has an amazing talent. One of my favourite is this one : Chemical Plant from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (also totally in love with the Green Zone one), one of my most played childhood game ! He really nailed it and it sounds great. If you like him, you got to check his acapella of One Winged Angel : Totally insane. These days, I have been listening to OST all days. In general, I love dubstep, metal (and metalstep actually). I also like Classic, Baroque, Romantic (I am grateful toward my former music professor for that). From Jazz / Blues to Extreme Metal (including (hard) rock, punk, almost every forms of metal)... I also appreciate a lot traditionnal celtic music (for my origins) and Japanese traditionnal (I dream to live there during my lifetime).
