I'm seeing people talk about this around the internet and on Facebook, but there isn't an actual official channel topic about it I've seen, so here we go. It bugs me when some seem so passionate about change of certain things but then not report on it. Some folks think they're just altogether bad/break immersion etc, but I personally think they're great. The only issue I could agree with involves these two in particular, and less so maybe 1-2 others: These seem less like paintings and more still the backer's photo with clothes/background added. The man on right stands out the most, I think (edit: it may be important to note that these were adjusted to be exactly how the backer wanted, as close as possible). I love cat portrait! lol. The female ones are nice especially, like the one that has the flower design over her eye. That looks like a Mana original piece even. This has potential to be a very sensitive topic, but I'm going to host this discussion myself and see how it goes. Please be considerate.

I mean I don't care for some of them for obvious reasons but I also don't care enough to say CHANGE THEM because...it's backer portraits at the end of the day. I was hoping from the get go they'd do a good job at making them fit stylistically and some turned out pretty goofy and over the top. It's just a personal preference thing but I was hoping all of them would have a gothic seriousness to them. To be clear I think they LOOK good I just was hoping for a less.. LOOK AT MEEEEEE type of vibe to them.

I'm a backer but not one of those lucky enough to have a portrait. But personally I love it. They are hilarious and visually well done, and if they only show up at the start of the game I think that's not a huge hit to 'immersion', chances are you wont be walking through that hall for a long while once you move onto the rest of the castle. And I mean come on if' it's immersion we're going to talk about, Miriam is cooking and whipping out Japanese victory poses how's that any better? Lets us not forget these people contributed a vast amount of personal wealth to make this game come true, I think they deserve to be acknowledged and immortalized in a fun and unique way.

There is a nod-wink quality to these portraits, but I don't think it breaks immersion. I was hoping the backer images might be used in a wider variety of formats such as group portraits, dramatic scene paintings, tapestries, stain glass windows, or even statuary --but the team needs to be perfectly fair to everyone involved. My portrait didn't make the cut for this demo either, but let me tell you, Mana's artwork is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! My likeness is spot on, and my clothing was effectively stylized to suit the 18th century. I'm so happy with her work, I may commission her to make a family portrait for me in the same style. I'm really THAT happy with it.

Immersion is overrated. I'm about playing a video game-y video game myself, at least as how Castlevania has always been.

Really my issue is that they're hanging out riiiiight there in the castle entrance. It makes me feel like those hallways are so long and utterly boring just for the sake of having enough room to put the paintings in.
Couldn't there just be like... an art gallery-ish room they can go in?

When I passed by the portraits for the first time, I immediately had thoughts of "gosh, what kind of weirdos used to live in this castle?" Considering how strange the castle itself is, I think this first impression is nothing if not appropriate.

I like the portraits, besides the IGAvania games always have funny jokes in the castle rooms, in the item and monster descriptions, also in past games we had all sorts of wacky items, weapons, gear, spells, and skills. The developers put all of this elements just for fun, even the Classicvania games have all kinds of hidden jokes or just plain dumb humor and I don't think it breaks immersion.
Bloodstained developers, if you are reading all of this, please put more stupid and just for fun items, weapons, gear, spells, skills and hilarious item and bestiary entries.

As far as having them in the entrance, I've heard some folks say they wish it was somewhere else in the castle, but I think the entrance is great for this kind of thing.
Think about it this way - how often did you revisit the long Symphony entrance hallways after you were done with that area, even after the first time? There was no reason to because there isn't much of anything to find or drop in that area and it doesn't connect to anything else, the teleporter and shortcuts are beyond that point.
In the demo, we're making that long walk on the bridge > drawbridge > entrance hallway and back, which we're probably going to need to do all of I imagine like, twice in the full game. The village and castle teleport spots and the lack of anything to find in those hallways will mean that the we and the backers see their portraits first thing, it gives that impression and feeling for if desired a one time experience, and then we can move on and (if necessary) more fully embrace the immersion as it were if that's your preference.
It would be far more "look at me!", I'd say, if the portraits were in something like the library or an art themed stage that we would have to make multiple backtrack trips through. As I recall, there are some others sprinkled throughout other areas of the game, mostly I imagine like the one in the lethal boots find area (a singular room that you won't need to revisit).

I personally find that cat portrait quite cute and eccentric. Not at all a problem for me. People have always had a big problem accepting the tongue-in-cheek aspect of Castlevania (fighting frogs? getting Pizza New York style and Omelettes as health items?), but not me. Kudos to the timid guy who gave money to the devs and then decided his/her cat was more photogenic.

The only one I have a "problem" with is the rightmost one in the screen you posted. Not because it's goofy but because it looks like the face is photoshopped on the painting as it was.
Other than that, I think they look nice and are not a problem.
With the whole matter of cute/funny stuff in the game... ok, the past games had it and it's fine (and funny) TO AN EXTENT. There's no need to go way overboard with the joke stuff just because the series always had those elements. They fit right in if they're in a reasonable amount. If I wanted to play a purely humour-centric, silly Metroidvania, I'd just go replay Guacamelee for the millionth time.

Eh, they didn't bother me tbh. I was too focused on killing mortes and bats to care about those paintings lol.
Though some paintings did catch my eye, like the cat one. I liked that one in particular.

Yeah, the cat picture was a request from someone to put it in the game so in the game it goes.
Besides, who is to say the legions of hell don't have felines of note in their ranks?

The rest seem to blend well. The cat is amazing. That stays or I'm fighting somebody lol

I like them. Mana did them and we have had weird stuff in IGA's games that break emersion. Backers made the game happen, so having all their portraits stuffed in one big room hidden somewhere in the castle like what was done in Goetia would make me feel like they are less a part of the whole game. I'd like to see them randomized. If I had my portrait in (I don't) I'd think it would be neat to know it could pop into any picture frame. Plus then it would be like the portraits are haunted and change every time you see them. The backers would be haunted paintings. How cool.

theyre the souls of the shardbinders, found and housed within paintings by gebel so they dont have to wander for eternity... unfortunately, being a painting is more boring than simply being immortal, so they have to have their fun somehow

It would be far more "look at me!", I'd say, if the portraits were in something like the library or an art themed stage that we would have to make multiple backtrack trips through. There is nothing more iconic and "look at me" than the front entrance of the castle. A fitting environment for them is far more subtle regardless if you agree or not.

Some folks think they're just altogether bad/break immersion etc, but I personally think they're great. My only issue is pretty much these two in particular, and less so maybe 1-2 others: These two guys in particular look less like paintings and more still the backer's photo with clothes/background painted. Vampire teeth man on right stands out the most, easily imo. I love cat portrait! lol. The female ones are especially good, like the one that has the flower design over her eye. That looks like a Mana original piece even. The female rose-eye portrait is beautiful, perfectly fitting in with the game. I dislike the ones in your pic because of the silly expressions, but if that's what the backers wanted, there's nothing to be done. Ah, well... The girl with the rose eyepatch is actually my backer portrait. I was pleasantly surprised when I was playing the demo when I came across it, especially so early. It made me really giddy with joy. I knew that the portraits would show up in the castle entrance but didn't think they would be in the demo. I never got the impression that it would break the immersion. However I feel like the portraits should be placed a little differently. Having two portraits on one wall makes it look a little crammed in there. Perhaps making them on one wall with pillars on the side to look more like a gallery presentation might have been better so in between portraits you see the background a little bit. I had no problem with the portrait next to mine, and I loved the cat...but you have to think about maybe what was requested. When the Kickstarter began, people who bought the Ancestral Bloodline Tier were under the impression that there was going to be a different artstyle involved. So perhaps the people that put in the descriptions for the Portraits may have had a different theme in mind. Honestly we do not know if they just posted a picture of themselves and stated "I want to look like Dracula" or "I want to look like a monk". I know that when I received my Portrait art I was actually quite surprised with how high the quality was.

The only thing I'll say is, I did think that some seemed a little goofy and having them so early in the game in the hallways (and bunched two at a time) did seem to break the aesthetic of the game a bit. But then, I haven't necessarily nailed down in my head what the aesthetic for Bloodstained is. So, adding things like this, with all due respect to the backers, doesn't necessarily help with setting the introductory tone of the overall art direction for a new franchise. Right now, I might say that Bloodstained's predominant art direction is maybe Order of Ecclesia meets Darkstalkers. All the same, I will admit that jokes have been a part of IGA's games.
