Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon was officially revealed (see it HERE) the game is the fulfillment of a kickstarter's stretch goal, the $ 4.500.000 stretchgoal about a mini-game. The game is a spin-off 8-bit obviously inspired by Castlevania 3, using Bloodstained setting and characters. Considering such reveal, answer the questions below and comment! 1) Gremory seems to be a very important enemy in the game, if not the final boss. It shows up in the trailer and at the moon. There has been several speculations of Gremory being the villain's sidekick on the main game, maybe the equivalent of Castlevania's Death. Considering it seems to be the main enemy on Curse of the Moon, do you think that possibility is even higher? 2) The 8-bit mini-game was promised to be a prequel, whose plot would be 10 years before the main game (when Miriam was sleeping and Zangetsu was probably already battling the first wave of demons). IGA made an executive decision and changed "prequel" to "spin-off". That means that Curse of the Moon doesn't have any connection to the main canon of Ritual of the Night. Did you liked or disliked such decision? 3) The playable characters are Zangetsu, Miriam, Alfred and Gebel. Would you had prefered other characters as playable? I don't know that it doesn't have any connection to the main cannon of Ritual of the Night, but I don't mind either way. It's an 8-bit style game, so gameplay first. 3) The playable characters are Zangetsu, Miriam, Alfred and Gebel. Would you had prefered other characters as playable? Who would you substitute / choose?
I thought it was really clever that they chose Alfred instead of, say, Dominique. In a 3D/High-Res game I would prefer to have Dominique instead, though. 4) It has been stated that the game has no special upgrades or things like that and it is mostly focused on hard stages that must be beaten and you can find shortcuts by using specific characters. What are your thoughts over this? It surely makes the game more "classic" but it may be a downside for today's gaming standards.I think people will be accepting/forgiving in this regard precisely because it looks 8-bit. They simply won't be held to the same standards as a 3D game, and that's fine, I think. It means people will approach it with an open mind and hopefully learn how fun those games can be. I mean, I've played way more 8/16 bit games than modern ones, if for no other reason than they each take up less of your time. Not every game has to last 50 hrs. 5) Would you change anything on how each character was presented? Considering their skills and abilities revealed for the game?Nope. Well, maybe I would have liked it better if Gebel turned into something other than a bat. I personally doubt that they would have shown the final boss in the trailer I hope they didn't, but Gremory may even have her own agenda that has nothing to do with others for all we know, either way I don't think they gave us any solid idea of her motivations beyond her being a boss to overcome.

Was it Iga that made the decision? I thought it was Inti myself. I mentioned this in another post that "spin-off" can mean so many different things to people in particular when your talking about people from different countries, so I've given up on assuming till May 24th. I personally hope that it fits somehow into the overall story but it could still be a kick-ass game even if it doesn't.

I really wouldn't want to "dismiss" any of the current roster they all look cool but if I could add anyone it would be Dominique and Bloodless and Johannes. Maybe Johannes could attack with books like Charolette did in Portrait of Ruin or set up traps for the enemies fighting with his brains not brawn, and if indeed the game is not Canon why not have a scenario of Bloodless going "rogue" as it were, Dominique would be a great weaker but faster and more agile version of Alfred.

I don't think that it's been stated that there are NO special upgrades at all, but assuming that that's the case, I really don't see this as being a negative. Nostalgia is the number one selling point of the game, that and retro has a niche audience in the younger generation anyways and for them this will be a fairly new type of challenge, combing the beautiful design and relation to Bloodstained and gothic horror with the cheap price of $10 I really think alot of people will give it a try as long as it's advertised enough that they know about it. Finding all the upgrades and earning them and exploring the game to find the best route through it are both challenges just in different ways, they both in a sense challenge the player to "break" the game and find the weak points about it so that you can easily make your way through it.

I agree that having Gebel change into something other then a bat would have been nice, it's not bad that he does it's just abit on the nose particularly with his nature as the presumed antagonist and shooting out bats instead of fireballs, I hope that there will be a few detailed pixel portraits of the characters that are large and show the details of their face and outfits in cutscenes, similar to Shovel Knight so we can really see the details of the costumes, I hope the the characters will have small details like idle poses and things like that. Miriam's tri-blade attack and Gebels bat attack seem to be identical but that may or may not be a bad thing, have to wait till I play the game.

I already stated that I hope it will be canacal but assuming it's not I hope they fully exploit that fact. Not worry about justifying the things that cannot be and give us a story that no one expects and realizes that they didn't even realize that this is what they wanted all along by the end.

1: Seeing as Gebel is the antagonist of the main game but a playable character, it seems fair that Gremory fill the role. I mean, the community assumed early on that she was essentially the Death to the
2: I would by being a spin-off it means that its importance to the main game is only slightly neglected. The term "prequel" might give casual consumers that you need to play Curse of the Moon to play Ritual of the Night, and I don't believe IGA has really pitched many of his games as prequels or sequels to others, unless you count the Sorrow duology and Symphony of the Night. He probably wants to avoid the problem of a comprehensive timeline all over again, even if fans have entertained a time period the games take place in.
3: I was actually surprised Johannes isn't playable. I would have expected him over Alfred, but I imagine Johannes' abilities, if based on artwork, would make him essentially the whip user of the game, which Miriam also is.
4: Shortcuts and stuff are fine, and that's not an issue for me. Having different routes is interesting for replaying the game, but I wonder if that would play a role in the multiple endings stuff.
5: I would like to take this question and move it into mechanics. Their presentation and skillset is fine, but I'm not a fan for how the game handles multiple playable characters. Unlike in Dracula's Curse, a character death isn't the loss of an ingame life: you need all of your playable characters to die before a life is taken away. I feel this ruins potential "character only" runs, seeing as a death in one part of the level might as well be a reset of the whole level, seeing as you'd have to die three more times to get the character back. Really puzzling decision...
6: I imagine some endings will make references to stuff associated with the main game. For example, I totally imagine Miriam's ending to be one that references her comatose state before the game starts.

1) Yes, seeing Gremory at the moon on the art makes me think she is either the final boss in CotM or/and has a role as CV`s Death.
2) I am fine with this being a spin-off. It might be that in this story all characters join to fight Gremory or some other threat. For me, it is not important to have a narrative canon where everything fits nicely. This can be a sides story and it is cool!
3) I like the playable characters, and I love seeing Zangetsu as the main character. I prefer him over Miriam.
4) I like the classic presentation of this game, without upgrades, but focusing on various characters playing together and using shortcuts to get to the end in many possible ways.
5) I would not change anything, maybe just the characters sprites which looked a bit too colorful. I like Gebel turning into a bat. I wish there were vampires here, and Dracula.
6) Yes, some connection sure, but not all tightly explained and narrated. Just a side story to explore with the 4 characters together.

Gremory's power is related to the moon as listed in her old description, and she's obviously depicted in front of the moon in the art for the game. There may be another more hidden villain, but I have no idea who that would be. 2) The 8-bit mini-game now a spin-off rather than prequel I think it's great because it opens up the possibility for a full game prequel for him to do. He can think more about it and do it exactly how he'd want the story to go instead of locking out the possibility this early. 3) The playable characters are Zangetsu, Miriam, Alfred and Gebel. Would you had prefered other characters as playable? Who would you substitute / choose? Most of the regulars probably know I wanted Dominique over Alfred. To me she is clearly the Belnades of the story, and with the last name Baldwin, completing a Circle of the Moon tribute here. I and almost everyone else expected Alfred to be a side villain character, basically a RotN NPC on neutral terms that you may/may not have to fight. I hope Dominique makes it into CotM somehow or the main game. We even know at this point she has weapons and magic, on top of being from the church and running a shop (making her almost a 1:1 Yoko). 4) No leveling system, hard levels, downside for today's gaming standards Today's gaming standards can take a hike. Casual mode is the only concession needed. 5) Would you change anything on how each character was presented? Considering their skills and abilities revealed for the game? Not really. It'd be nice to see Miriam's whip and and maybe even Zangetsu's sword get upgrades like in classicvania, i.e. from leather to chain, more range, the glow or fire effect, etc. I'm totally fine with Gebel having a bat form and even a Wing Smash lol. I expect it to have what they said in the stream, which was subtle hints and connections for things between it and RotN - which is something I suggested for it here a while ago. What I'd like to see from this though is something I brought up two years ago or something (XombieMike 's secret room contest), but essentially, playing through the prequel and paying attention gives you subtle hints to certain obscure secrets in the main game. Maybe a clue as to solve an otherwise impossible puzzle, or a background piece being/not being present in one version or another gives you an idea of how to find an item. My specific example was story-related, too...
Say during a prequel cutscene, Johannes, fed up with the alchemist's guild, casts away a signet ring given to him by them into the waters/moat surrounding the castle (which may not have been there then). You learn at some point in the main game that the alchemists' rings transmute into innocuous rocks when submerged in water. Later, you're able to freely traverse the huge body of water around the castle, and if you can recall the general area of where Johannes threw the ring away, you can navigate to that area and (like other areas) there are rocks that can be moved like Yorick's head, i.e. kicked around. If you use the subtle hints to figure out which rock is the ring, you can navigate the waters with it, using clever movement, kicks and platforming to bring it to the surface. If it's just a rock-rock, well, you wasted your time and it just rolls ashore. If it's the ring, when it hits the air, you get a useful artifact.
I think specifically this one would do like, +% of finding craft materials or success rate of the process, if that's a thing. So I'm happy they're doing that. I first thought of that when we only knew about 4 characters and it was still a prequel, so I might have come up with something different otherwise

1) Yeah, it definitely feels like a bit of a mirror of the way Death was presented in the PS2 and DS-era games.
2) I'm ambivalent, but tying in to #3, I think it works better this way so there's an excuse to have Miriam be playable. The series is just starting and she's the face of it, it's preferable for her to be out there.
3) No real feelings on this either, we haven't played the games yet and so there are huge gaps in our understanding of the characters' motives, outcomes, lore, coolness, etc. We're going in too blind at the moment still for me to have very strong opinions to this end.
4) This is the perfect way to have done a game in this style. Maybe you take Dude A and you skip a really nasty part of the level, maybe you take Dude B and you can find extra powerups to make the boss easier.
5) Presentation-wise they're fine, but this is really going to come down more to playing the game than anything else to see how the attacks feel and flow. Does something with decent area denial on paper take so many hits that monsters can tank through anyway? Does a super-strong attack have such low speed or range that it's extremely situational? Gotta try them first-hand to know. As a bit of an example, I see Mega Man 9 as a gold standard in ability use. Every boss weapon is well-balanced in number of shots, multiple enemies and stage hazards that are fully exploited by each weapons' properties, and they're all still very useful in generic non-tailored situations.
6) Yeah, more or less.

The only thing I wish would be different, and maybe it will (but I kinda doubt it)... I hope you start out as one character and have to unlock or "free" the others to be able to play as them. Don't worry you got your wish, you unlock the other charcters as you play, I belive by defeating bosses ala Castlevania 3 Dracula's Curse style. You'll start out as Zangetsu.

Anything is possible, but I think she serves who ever that can defeat her, being not only a demon, but also a support-role if you are worthy.

It makes my brain hurt. Canon or not, it is not to me and just a "fun project" so sure, it works. And I guess I "like it".

Change Miriam to anything else, would make so it could fit the lore of the main game, since Miriam is asleep when Zangetsu is out and about, it doesn't make sense she is both here and there. Unless the one you have in the retro mini-game are "the doppelganger". Many liked Johannes to be the whip-guy, and if this were the case, I would change Alfred to Dominique.

Todays gaming have to be co-op and other nonsense. It is good as is. Focus is to survive, and finish the game. Heck, not even achievements are needed here!

If I could choose anything, a 16bit style of the game would be pretty cool. But 8-bit is fine, it has a charm to it. 16 would give us havier game mechanics, that is almost a fact.

Maybe. Hard to see the connection due to what I wrote above. Even if it were an alternative reality, it would make less sense to even visit that reality, and have 2 of everyone.. Hmm. I don't know. I do not think they have any connection than its like Inti Creates vision based on IGA's concept. And Art Play, along with IGA is his own vision on the game. If you guys have seen / heard Reanimation by Linkin Park, it was similar deal, where they gave away their voices and samples to others and made an album, which every song was from a guest-artist, remixing their original. It is like the same here, a remix. Not canon.
Yeah, I will call this Bloodstained CotM, the remix.

Huzzah! Another question thread by Pure Miriam and also another excuse for glorious green textTM!!! Now, let's get to answering these delicious questions.. 1) Gremory seems to be a very important enemy in the game, if not the final boss. It shows up in the trailer and at the moon. There has been several speculations of Gremory being the villain's sidekick on the main game, maybe the equivalent of Castlevania's Death. Considering it seems to be the main enemy on Curse of the Moon, do you think that possibility is even higher? I think it a great possibility that Gremory is the top demon in the hierarchy of wherever these demons reside (other than the Castle that Gebel summons in the main story).2) The 8-bit mini-game was promised to be a prequel, whose plot would be 10 years before the main game (when Miriam was sleeping and Zangetsu was probably already battling the first wave of demons). IGA made an executive decision and changed "prequel" to "spin-off". That means that Curse of the Moon doesn't have any connection to the main canon of Ritual of the Night. Did you liked or disliked such decision? It is stated that this spin-off is still part of canon, just in a "different part". Not necessarily a prequel, but it has its place.
This game will also apparently have multiple endings; so even IF I disliked the decision to change the story of this game (which I don't; I'm fine with it), I'm satisfied with there being more than one ending in its place. That at least increases replay value. ^ A classic-style game like the spin-off isn't played for the story by most people. The gameplay is the main draw.3) The playable characters are Zangetsu, Miriam, Alfred and Gebel. Would you had prefered other characters as playable? Who would you substitute / choose? Nope. The four characters chosen look perfect for this game. 4) It has been stated that the game has no special upgrades or things like that and it is mostly focused on hard stages that must be beaten and you can find shortcuts by using specific characters. What are your thoughts over this? It surely makes the game more "classic" but it may be a downside for today's gaming standards. I like to call it trial-and-error gameplay, for those who are new to the "classic" Castlevania games. It's a throwback to the "Nintendo Hard" NES days.
Honestly, this game looks to be a bit easier than CV3 was, and it's good that there's a more forgiving "Casual" Mode for new players.
5) Would you change anything on how each character was presented? Considering their skills and abilities revealed for the game? Nope. I like everything I see so far. I think each character is purposely severely-limited in abilities just to make each of them viable for progression (don't just rely on one character only).
6) Although it was revealed that Curse of the Moon is a spin-off, do you still expect it to have SOME connection to the main game's plot? Such as multiple universes / realities or something? Yes, of course. As I mentioned in my answer to your Question #2, it was mentioned that this game is still part of canon. It may have some connection after all.That's all for the green text, folks!

I'm fine with it 5. nope 6.I think it'll have a loose connection (outside of the characters, setting, & some boss characters/enemies) to the main game 7. From what (little) I understand it's apparently as dead as the Wii U version of Bloodstained ........ Now I'd like to add a question 8. Will the soundtrack for Curse of the Moon also be included with both the digital & physical versions of the Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night soundtrack that backers (depending on tier) are suppose to be receiving with their game or will it be getting it's own separate release?
