Regardless, looks really good! I joined the Castlevania franchise a bit late (Portrait of Ruin was my first) so while this retro game won't be tickling any nostalgia, it'll at least be a fresh experience for me. I, on the other hand, experienced something quite refreshing watching the trailer: thankfulness at being old. I still remember playing Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse on my NES at home... oh, the 8-bit memories!

I'm kind of surprised at how many "looks better than the main game" comments I'm seeing online. Maybe the main game demo in June will change some minds. Anyway yeah this looks mad hype. But where's Dominique? I hope this doesn't dis-confirm her as playable in the main game As for boss number and stages (8?), is there documentation with the hard numbers or are people just basing it off what they've seen in the trailer.

Actually I listened to about half that podcast, got super busy, have been meaning to finish listening to it but haven't gotten around to it yet so no I didn't hear that question and whatever the answer may be (I guess its no).

This is SO EPIC. I was out for some days due to some personal matters, and they suddenly announce THIS?
This is awesome. I was hoping they could use 16-bit for the prequel-now-spin-off game, but i'm happy with the 8 bit now that i've seen what they are doing.
So, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. Castlevania 3 inspired gameplay. Awesome. I have several things to talk about it, but i will let this for some other thread or opportunity. Anyways, it's interesting to see that Gremory is obviously focused as a main enemy in the game. We need to remember this is a spin-off, but that really makes me think that Gremory is very important to the main game too. The speculation that Gremory may be Bloodstained's Death grows bigger. Not only that, the bosses looks totally wicked. The bosses shown looks like this (in order of appearance): A Train's furnace Some kind of Mythological Turtle Some gold-related creature that looks like a gnome An Hydra Some weird-looking...whatever jumping with lightning bolts Bloodless Another weird-looking thing with lightning Gremory
Well, that sure is a game worth playing!

I was actually expecting something more toward 16-bit, but this is just fine. I think it's really interesting as a huge fan of Classicvania, but it does kind of look like a spin-off effort rather than a full-fledged effort. The level design is what has me most concerned right now. Maybe it's the fact that it's wide-screen, but the levels look like they're leaning more toward the airy style of Castlevania Legends. In other words, they don't look very tight. Is it possible it's set up to have multiple paths through levels like Mega Man 6? Moreover, could this simply also be a Metroidvania, except in 8-bit? I notice there are sections where it seems a specific character is seemingly needed to pass onward. Other than that, the backgrounds of some of the areas leave a little bit to be desired, even for 8-bit.
EDIT: The article from Siliconera clarified some of the above for me. I think I just need to play it and see more of it firsthand.
Now that this is a spin-off rather than a prequel, I think it will just be a random reimagining of Bloodstained rather than something that builds the story, but we'll see. Ifthat's true, it seems like an odd choice. I mean, if the problem was who would fill out the roster, they could have swapped some characters out. It just seems like it could be a missed opportunity. Also, given the enemy selection, I'd say we're getting a "spoilery" preview of what's going to be in the main game as well.
Keep in mind, though, there will still be a "Classic Mode" in the main game, which will give us a Classicvania with the visuals of the final Bloodstained game. Knowing that, I'm more comfortable with the direction of the retro game.
Still, choosing a platform for this is a real conundrum.

Holy crap! im pleasantly surprised to finally see the retro prequel, i was not expecting it to be like this! I was thinking it was going to be a small demo but this is it's own game, It's like CV3 and Shovel Knight had a beautiful baby.
I need to play this now.

It's a whole damn lot for a "mini game", that's for sure, and free at even the $28 tier.
The game seems to have around 8 bosses, it might even be longer than CV1.

Hey guys, I want to express my feelings about this game, I'm really thrilled and can't wait to play it!!!
I'd like to know if there's any info on how many stages are there (longer than the NES games I suppose? that would be enough for me!) Can I still go to kickstarter and back the project in the $28 tier to get it?

I've seen some online that wanted a GBA/DS style IGAvania instead of this and I'm seriously wondering what about "mini retro game" is unclear to these people. For a stretch goal bonus game this is more than enough and it looks like it plays great. I'm already "worried" about the budget for the main game (story only) being enough, it's not like they had vast resources for the spin off too.
Regarding those who say that to them this looks better than the main game: I understand them to a degree because this is a good pixel art adopting the style of a certain time period and modernizing it where it makes sense (a bit like Shovel Knight, on a smaller scale). Pixel art like this never got old IMO and it always has its charm if done right.
The main game on the other hand is more complex and with 3D graphics. While I still have faith that Bloodstained will be a great game and I've been excited for pretty much every video of gameplay released for us I admit that aside from the famous, early main hall screenshot (with the fountain and everything) I never thought the game looked particularly amazing. It's alright, and it will be better once every effect is finalized, but with pixel art is arguably "easier" to make a game looks really pleasing and stylized as long as you know what you're doing. 3D art can be really tricky to make right.
Again, these are just considerations. I don't mean that Bloodstained is ugly or anything (and even if it were, Curse of Darkness is one of my favorite games and it has really bad graphics, evem worse than its immediate predecessor which looks pretty good on the other hand) but I can understand those who say they like this spin off more esthetically, and even I do to a degree (in proportion, of course).

Okay, NOW i have time to do my usual analysis. Here goes:
GREMORY AS MAIN VILLAIN
At the beginning of the video, we can see Gremory showing up as something menacing and important. We all know that Curse of the Moon is a spin-off game, but it's impossible not to wonder, again, that Gremory seems to have a really important role on Bloodstained franchise after all. The rumors that Gremory could be the equivalent of Death on Castlevania, jusy grows more and more. Let's see what Curse of the Moon reveals about that, and if that will have any connection to the main game.
FOUR HEROES, LIKE CASTLEVANIA 3
With Zangetsu, Miriam, Gebel and Alfred, the game follows the same premise of Castlevania 3, with four heroes and each one with it's special abilities. it's easy to mirror them: Zangetsu is a powered-up version of Grant, mixed with Getsu Fuma from Getsu fuma den: Short reach and fast movements. Miriam is Trevor Belmont: Whip attacks and shards mimicking sub-weapons from Belmonts, such as Daggers and Sickles (that are basically crosses in behavior). Alfred is Sypha: powerful fire, ice and lightning magic. Gebel is Alucard: turning into bat and attacking with three bats (like Alucard's hell fire with three fireballs). CLASSIC GAMEPLAY
Not only the game actually has a "SCORE" meter, but the gameplay is classic, where you have no special powerful itens to obtain and count only with your skills and gameplay abilities to traverse the stage, being able to find shortcut by using other's characters abilities. That is a interesting mechanic that gives a new vibe to a classic gameplay flow, forcing you to try to maintain all four heroes.
CLOSING COMMENTS
The game looks promising and it seems that it will have LOTS of fun factor. I'm quite hyped for it and i hope the game does sell well and is well received. It's a chance to cater both the fans of "Igavania era" and fans of the "Classic era" of Castlevanias to Bloodstained, Castlevania's spiritual sucessor. Can't wait! That's all folks
