I started smoking 9 years ago when I was 16 and I've finally decided to quit. I'm using a smoke free app to track my progress and my last cigarette was 40 minutes ago as I write this.
I was a pack and a half smoker and it was costing me a fortune, over $130 a week to kill myself slowly! I'm in such bad shape that I can't even walk around my house without breathing from my mouth and going up a flight of stairs I'm all out of breath. My skin looks horrible and pale my voice is so deep, I wake up hacking with chest pain and I go throughout the day with heart palpitations. All of this from a 25 year old whose suppose to be in his prime!
Anyway, I've had enough! I threw out my last 3 packs (I bought a carton at a time) and I am beginning this journey. I'm not going to lie I am absolutely terrified about the next 72 hours and even more scared about the next 30 days. This is my first attempt at quitting but we shall see how it goes. I told my friends and family and they were like "yeah right" so I don't really have support so I'm hoping you guys can give me some encouragement and suggestions.
Thanks!
Also, I will be logging how I'm doing in this topic to keep anyone who is interested in knowing how I'm doing.

Good luck on getting smoke-free, my friend. One thing you can try is something like nicotine gum to help fight the cravings and ensure you don't fall back into cigarettes.

Thanks for the reply gunlord500 ! I think I'm just going to cold turkey everything nicotine. I feel like if I take NRT I'm just prolonging the suffering that I'm probably going to feeling in the coming days. But thanks for the suggestion! Here's how I'm doing right now for anyone interested... I woke up at 9am and all I could think about was cigarettes. The morning is the biggest problem for me because I chain smoke 3 as soon as I wake up with my coffee. So after going back and forth with my mind "I'll quit tomorrow instead" "just one won't hurt" and battling with it for an the whole morning I made it out still a non smoker. I really hope I can get through the next two weeks when things are suppose to be a lot tougher...

Keep it up. My dad quit cold turkey. Mom can't kick the habit, but wants to. That's why I never smoke. Seeing people want to stop but can't. It's hard to imagine unable to control that. It's so damn expense.
Its gonna take immense will power, dude. You can do this.

Thanks for the encouragement guys!
Well almost a full 24 hours in and I am really feeling the physical and mental withdrawals... three times I walked eight minutes to the nearest corner store trying to talk myself into and out of having a cigarette. The third time I actually walked in got to the counter but then I thought about how my friends and family would be like "we knew you couldn't do it" so I walked out. This has been a tough day for sure.

Thanks guys!
It's 1:14pm and I just woke up, falling asleep was hard and I really didn't want to wake up so I kept forcing myself to keep going back to sleep. I feel pretty terrible and it doesn't help that I can't stop thinking about cigs. It feels like I'm waging a war against Napoleon in my mind. I'm also really feeling it physically, my whole body feels like I got hit by a car. I'm definitely not going to be hanging out with my friends (two weeks) because 90% of them smoke. So I will continue trucking on and keep you guys updated.

Thought I'd chime in: my mom, cousin, next door neighbor and myself all quit using the patch. It gets rid of the physical cravings but not necessarily the psychological ones. In other words, if you do a task then "reward" yourself with a cigarette, it won't help in this respect. Like you I was a pack or so a day.
The key is to not follow the directions on the box; the package says to switch from step one to two after six weeks or so but all of us switched when we felt ready to do so. By the time I was on step three (the smallest dosage) I was forgetting to put on the patch and had essentially quit by that point. Just don't wear the patch when you're sleeping. Also when you do quit, take note of how much you've saved and reward yourself after certain milestones. That helps to prevent you from relapsing.
I wish you the very best of luck and success in quitting.

Hey everyone, thought I'd update you guys on how I'm doing since its been two days. No I did not smoke lol but man was today brutal. My body was cramping, I was sweating like crazy so I'm guessing the physical withdrawals have peaked. I also cried today something I haven't done in many years. I was so stressed out this morning... I walked up to the counter and stubbed my toe on it then by reflex I extended my arm over the counter and my coffee fell to the floor and the cup shattered and I looked at it for two seconds and just started bawling lol I'm laughing about it now but man everything is exuberated when you're going through withdrawals. Luckily no one was there to witness that! I'm feeling a little better now and a tiny bit more confident I can pull this off now. I'm still craving like crazy but boy do I not wanna have to repeat these four days again which is what I always think about when I'm thinking about buying some. Thanks for the suggestion Time 4 Tea! I'm going to try and see if I can pull it off like this first I've made it this far so I'm going to see if I can keep going like this. imgur.com/a/QAMNY

You probably already know this but don't hang out with any smoker friends for awhile. This. I quit smoking a few years back, cold turkey. I had stopped smoking for a year or so. There was a month long period where I was around people that smoked, consistently. And I couldn't fight off the urge to just have one smoke. I still smoke to this day... Not saying it is the fault of the people I was with, I was weak and gave in. Anyway I think its is all in the head. If you have made the decision to quit, you have to be strong mentally. As I believe a smoker never really quits smoking, they continuously fight off the urge to smoke. No matter where you go, you will come across people that do smoke and thus you will always be reminded of it. So my advice would basically be stay strong and commit to not smoking. Don't give in to temptation. 'Just one cig, cant do me any harm.' Be very carefull when you start thinking this. GL =]

Glad to hear things are going (relatively speaking) fairly well. I had the sweats too for the first few days which are the toughest so you're weathering the most difficult part of the storm. Don't give up and keep us posted on your progress!

Hey everyone here's my update... Seven days in and the physical withdrawals are pretty much gone, thank God! I'm starting to feel a lot better, I don't go through the whole day craving a cigarette anymore, although when I do crave it's still pretty intense but after timing myself it takes about 15min for it to go away. When it does come I go for a walk around the block twice and that usually gets rid of it. I've beat the physical withdrawals now I need to get through the psychological ones although I'm not sure if they ever end or if I'm going to have to constantly be on my toes to not slip up for the rest of my life. Anyway, thanks for the support guys!

Yay...Don't let your guard down though. Pretty sure many ex-quitters have relapsed after a month or two often enough for it to still be a serious hurdle to overcome.

Good luck!
It's a difficult habit to kick. Sometimes needing to kick it a few times before it takes.
But a sauna/steamroom helps sweat out some of those binding chemicals. Helps ease withdrawals.
I also recommend lots of lollipops and/or toothpicks (hand to face muscle memory), and keeping something close to your heart on your person. That little object can help curb some anxiety or depression. Music helps too. As long as it doesn't focus on depressing sounds/lyrics or too explosive for anxiety.

Thanks guys, this will be me final update because honestly it's not even that bad anymore. I feel a little down but that's pretty much it I probably get one or two intense cravings a day but now they last three minutes. Thank you guys for the support I really appreciated it! Also I should add food tastes amazing! I had Mc Donald's an hour a go and I was blown away! Talk about a huge benefit, before everything tasted plain but this is great. Thanks again guys!
