Quick summary/TL;DR version : It's a Metroviania with a assault rifle as your default weapon for 20 bucks that has a cool Zombi U-like death system of having to kill your previous dead body to get loot back and is probably the closest we'll ever get to playing a normal human character in a modern Castlevania style game.
Longer version:
So remember that mummy movie that came out this past summer, Wayforward made a game about it. And they went above and beyond the call for a 20 dollar tie in to a movie that has seemingly killed a franchise before it even got its second official film.( www.slashfilm.com/is-the-dark-universe-dead )
You are nameless faceless soldier 2799, you are sent to check out a tomb where they lost contact with a unit of people. You discover the unit is slaughtered as you traverse what is a glorified tutorial that also will give any super Metroid player flash backs. You get to the tomb just to find the mummy escaping, where she revives everything down there including your dead allies as zombies(who are smart enough to use guns. This acts as the self destruct "GTFO now" sequence anyone familiar with the genre is familiar with. But one aspect has majorly changed: dying on your escape ends the sequence early and gives you a peak at the major twist, your character becomes a zombie upon death.
Now regardless of whatever that outcome turns out to be, you are shown a quick scene of nameless faceless soldiers suiting up and flying to the castle in the middle of a forest. You are dropped off in the grave yard in front of the castle and have to fight your way in through several crow enemies, that fly at you in a wave pattern, to get inside. Once inside you're on a mission at first to find a technician who is in the basement area, you find them dead but there on a platform is a grenade upgrade. That upgrade allows you to blow up certain wooden objects that block doorways. After picking it up you hear from mission control(who is Dr. Jekyll, who does appear in the film played by Russell Crowe, though they make him less Russell Crowe looking here) and are told about 3 points on your map that are points of interest. From there you're basically let go to explore how you wish....
If you're familiar with the Metroidvania genre you're probably either really jazzed or saying "yeah sounds about right".
It's all done with the sprite work Wayforward (Shante Series, 'Mighty' ds game series, Contra 4, bloodrayne betrayal & many more) is known for with all the animations looking smooth.
The music is solid atmospheric pieces that sound right at home with some of the better of the genre, the sound effects provide a nice thump to things at points but clearly not too of the line
Gameplay is, at first, very Simon Belmont in terms of your character's physical limits except they can tread water and jump out of the water. They have an 8 way directional shooting with a button to lock them in place. Oh and if you die you must find the zombie of your old corpse and kill it in order to get your upgrades back, watch out I can use some of them. You get different types of weapons for upgrades and refillable health tanks in the form of med packs. Oh and the more annoying castlevania thing of your enemies projectiles going through walls and floors is there so be careful especially as you can't shoot the projectiles through the walls.
I don't want to spoil much more than that but would like to hear your opinions on it as a game.
