The art direction of the game has been a bit of an issue for me.. though that's probably because they're trying to use a 3D engine to make a 2D game.. and it's unlike any of the past 2D Castlevania games. The 3D just looks bad.
Better art and animation would help, though I'm not sure what this artwork is for. Ingame portraits? Artbook?
If anything improves the 3D art, I'm all for it. But other than that, I don't have that much of an educated opinion. Though I like the more realistic and detailed look, for what it's worth.
Edit: I'm also late on this, since I was going through my e-mail backlog.. Reading the last page it looks like it's already confirmed Mana's art won't be used ingame. Oh well.

I believe you are thinking on the concept 2D art they had over at kickstarter with more colors? I have read many miss that style, but it were clearly a mock-up and not a representation of the final product. The game isn't finished yet, so both environments and animations are under development.
This artwork, is like many have stated, promotional art. We believe, and many hope (I know I do) that Mana have made the portraits for the backer tier, which will be in the game. I think also Mana has done a few paintings, that are represented as paintings in the castle. So that means she might be a part of the whole spectrum of ingame art, but not as much or as a main concept artist.

I don't normally comment but I had to do so for this.
I believe that the comparison is not only unfair but is quite biased. It is easy to say that that one poster from Mana that is pretty much fanart and had all the time in the world to make it compared to all these concept arts that Natsume made that had to be done in time for the kickstarter. As for me, while I do believe that Mana's art looks good I much prefer the feel of the original art. Miriam was clearly envisioned to look more mature, cool, calm and collected. She doesn't seem to show her emotions too much. Whereas with Mana's she just looks like a child with that babyface and huge smile, she ends up looking like a completely different character who is cosplaying as Miriam but isn't trying to act like her. Obviously this is something that can be easily fixed and the art is indeed pretty good. I just felt like I had to point out these things because I feel that the whole thing looks incredibly biased.
I guess my biggest problem is the way this was brought up and presented, it feels kind of underhanded.
If this were to be truly only used for marketing purposes and gets Miriam to look more like how she was originally designed then I don't have much problem with it. I just kind of feel bad for Natsume and yes I know that some of you are saying that they aren't working on the main game anymore but it's not like there wasn't going to be anymore marketing and we don't really know what the actual team has in store and they can't just tell us everything. It's not like Natsume has been fired or something, he has been focusing on the prequels and it wouldn't be unheard of for him to do some promotional art when the game is about to get released.

This is about using an artist already on hand for art they need.

I also think that Mana would be more familiar with Miriam and her personality than all of us. She is on the development team for the game after all. There has been a significant amount of fans worried that Miriam will be devoid of emotion like how Shanoa was seen, so seeing her smile once in a while is probably a good thing. A common theme in IGA's games is a feeling of hopeful energy among the darkness and monsters. We can't really say how her character develops in the game, only ArtPlay which includes Mana knows those things.
As far as any underhandedness, while I can see how someone could see it that way, it's more about passion for something and an opportunity. It's giving Mana the job of something that they will need to hire for anyway. What they may end up with otherwise could very possibly be less favorable than both Natsume and Mana's work, right? If just for the sake of going with something that the majority of people like, it seems like a better decision to go with the artist that will apparently get the game quite noticed. The alternative is an unknown, and it would be an unknown that I doubt would pull a 97% approval with the fans.
I'm not sure if it's possible that 505 could use the same art from the Kickstarter for everything, but it probably would not be nearly as effective as new assets specifically for the dimensions, layouts and purposes they would need.

AHHHHH. I am overwhelmed and humbled by all the support and comments from everybody!! Angel-Corlux pretty much answered all the questions and comments that I had to say. I was even going to say if my artwork wasn't well received, we do have Natsume-san's contact without the association of Inti Creates (we would hire him to freelance if that was the case). However, seeing that it would make a huge confusion, we wouldn't want to trouble 505 Games by contacting him. Regarding a couple of comments on Miriam's expression, I made her smile based on what I read through IGA's script (of course, my own interpretation). I can't recall which particular interview it was, but IGA referred to Miriam's personality as "most human" out of all the protagonists he has worked on, and "an ordinary girl." She's quite expressive and cheerful at times. Our game director also expressed that he didn't want Miriam to be a "lesser Shanoa" so I decided to stay away from making her look too similar to Shanoa. Natsume-san's version of Miriam is also during the time the story was at its concept stage. I hope I was able to bring his character designs to justice, but I do fully understand those who prefer the original artwork better. This time, I fitted all the criteria needed to create this piece - someone who has an easy contact with ArtPlay and 505 Games, knew the game, able to draw and draw within the short period of time. The reason IGA has not asked me to make artwork was due to the amount of work I do as a Communication Manager (which is what I am hired for). Unless there isn't a demand, I would continue to work as the bridge between 505 Games and ArtPlay, as well as a community manager. Lately, the amount of work goes way beyond what one person could do and 505 Games has lifted a lot of that work off my shoulders. If they were to request new art asset, I would be able to draw within the time I'm in the office. IGA and our game director also agreed that if there was enough demand, they would allow me to work on future artworks. We just wrapped up NYCC and it was great being able to meet everyone and just be near home. I'd like to sincerely thank 505 Games and Project TriForce for giving us this opportunity and giving me the opportunity to draw a piece for this event. Thank you XombieMike for this thread and I can't thank everyone enough for all the kind words.

You doing any marketing art for this game is a huge plus and I really think you were faithful to the original designs while making it feel different all the same. I know personally I’m pulling for your increased involvement when this game becomes a series. As much as I love you posting here and you’re easily my favorite community manager around... but I think more than anything you becoming an art director or something of that nature would make me most happy. Your art deserves to be out there even more. So I’ll keep crossing my fingers for that scenario to play out. i know it’d get me amped. Keep up the great work.

Journey back to January 2016... God. The world is not fair for artists. How can people be this good and not be rich? It's just the same with music. It's almost like a lottery if you're found and recognized for what you do, and that's even after working so long for it. ...I hope she eats her fair share of the donuts. edit: I'm kind of mad about this right now >_< edit2: But wait...maybe IGA knew that and wanted to hire her partly for this reason, for some justice? Huh...dude...hm. Of course, it was her friend who connected her to him, but still. He could have thought something similar. From the old Mana/vusc thread. I was upset that she had been working in the industry for years and doing such awesome work, yet not known/recognized for it enough.
Buuuuuuut:
That makes sense. Her position is about communication, not art, so it kind of clouds the air and perhaps takes some focus away from Bloodstained. But yeah. Unavoidable eventually, for sure. D: Unavoidable'd

All that being said, personally what I want aside, I only want such things to move forward if it's what the community wants as well. That seems to be the case, in the capacity of promotional art at least. I leave the decisions and direction in IGA's hands.
Maybe she'll even be able to branch out and draw us "something like Pikachu" lol...

Speaking of Mana's and Natsume's art... I still remember a certain piece of Natsume's that he created back in 2016. I don't remember what event it was exactly for, but it was right at the Inti-Creates booth.
