I'm surprised there isn't a post about Metroid: Samus Returns yet.
I haven't played it, so I'm wondering what the end result feels like. Is this another "Metroid's Greatest Hits" title like Metroid Zero Mission, or does it stand on its own? From what I've seen, I have little doubt it is a solid, competently made game. What I am concerned about is...
1.) It just feels like a "been there, done that" remix of Metroid II + Super Metroid (to the point that it starts to feel more like the latter than the former, which is what happened when Zero Mission did Metroid 1 + Super Metroid. When you do that, it sort of defeats the point of "remaking" a game, when you're warping it into another, distinct entry.)
2.) It reimagines Metroid II so much so that it should have kept going and made itself into a completely original Metroid game with very little rehash.
Now, I understand that the whole point of this game was probably to go halfway and give a little bit to everyone. I just find this approach annoying. But it was probably to test to see if MercurySteam would be a good partner and to remind people about the classic Metroid format.
Where does it fall based on what I've laid out here?

I've played very little of it, considering that I've been distracted by both work & other games.
But, from my minimal experience of the game, I love it. The original Metroid II: Return of Samus was the very first Metroid game I ever played back in the day.
This game is also a result of MercurySteam learning from the mistakes they made in Mirror of Fate, and their development of this game was overseen by Nintendo (Yoshio Sakamoto); so there was little chance of this game being a "God of War-clone" anyway.
It's a very well-made solid remake, if you ask me.

i like it, even though the game has progression gates like m2 did i dont feel like im progressing from story checkpoint to story checkpoint like fusion and other m suffered from, and the world is open enough and the movement options varied enough that you can do some neat things to explore more of the map and even get some items in ways you kinda wonder if that was intended or if you just did a sequence break, and then the environments so far have been varied, theres little things scattered about the background as you wander about, the 3d actually does look really nice in the game, the game is fairly difficult though, even with the melee counter, so yeah, i would totally recommend playing it

From what I've seen (still need to get it myself) it made enough of both (being a remake of Metroid II + adding new stuff to keep it interesting) so yes, apparently if you do like Metroid, you kindda have to get it now.
Which I will... eventually.

The creator of AM2R tells people to buy the game and that he wants it to succeed. But some of his fans are still getting all hissy and demanding that Samus Returns is a flop.
Anyway, I haven't been able to put too much time into it, but it's good from what I've experienced. A nice return to the Super and Fusion style of game, and quite a bit harder then I was expecting.

Anyway, I haven't been able to put too much time into it, but it's good from what I've experienced. A nice return to the Super and Fusion style of game, and quite a bit harder then I was expecting. Some people are still doing that? Sheesh. I can't wait to see if DoctorM64 might tell his fans that he likes Samus Returns as a game better than his own fan-game: metroid2remake.blogspot.com/2017/09/the-return-of-samus.htmlHe said he was jealous of a certain idea in SR that he wishes he thought of for AM2R. He thought SR's gameplay was punishing at times, but always worth it for the rewards. He even said he'll definitely play it again, and that it was very well executed. Now, I'm not the kind of person who bothers to waste precious time trolling people, especially not on a site like GameFAQs (forums of which are occupied by some pretty obnoxious and venomous people) or even comments-sections of YouTube videos. However, this was one time that information [like the provided link above] made me extremely tempted to pick on a few individuals I knew to be big-time haters of Samus Returns. (I remember them insisting that AM2R is "objectively a better game in every way", implying that all other remotely-positive opinions about Samus Returns are false) ...I even went back on another GameFAQs board two weeks ago and said "Don't like punishing gameplay? Then you'll never enjoy classic Castlevania or Ninja Gaiden games!" I don't know whether I should feel this way now... but I now feel like a terrible person.
