win 7 definitely had a little more "going on" than, say, XP (or my favorite OS Win 2k), especially with Aero turned on and all that jazz. I will say, however, that performance for games is _highly_ dependent on how tuned the drivers are for a specific OS. Each OS introduces new APIs to take advantage of new or rebuilt subsystems. I say this as i'm writing a driver now for work and the number of new functions that "just work" that were introduced with Vista (and subsequently carried into Win 7) are huge, and this is just for filter drivers. the subsystems for video and audio were likely similarly overhauled/revamped which means that the "old way" of doing something will still work (since MS loves backwards compatibility) but those old APIs are likely shimmed on top of the new system and likely at a performance cost.

That's basically been my experience. If something was XP compatible it runs and runs reliably (i.e. won't crash) but it may not be as fast. Older stuff unless it's horribly hardware dependent seems to be the same. But a lot of this depends on how old the software was and what kind of hardware it "requires" or is "Designed for". I remember on my previous computer when I went to run my first run copy of Unreal Gold if I didn't use it in DirectX mode the graphics lagged if I got much above 1024x768. On my current system, running in DirectX was actually SLOWER than the software render, even on full 1080p. But I'm pretty sure that's due to that copy of unreal being designed for... I think it was DX5 or DX6??? So it wouldn't surprise me that on a system THAT much newer that it might actually run worse.

Yeah. Its also possible that games that are faster on dx11 were made for dx11 and pretty much makes no effort to work with dx9 as well. So your lc chugs along to accommodate that.
All i know is on the only games i had that actually let you set dx11 and dx9 in the options were faster on my pc with xp and dx9 than 7 and 11... And this isnt just about xp and 7. Every time a new system comes along its supposedly faster and more optimized, and I personally have never seen this to be the case ever.

Haven't tested the RC version yet, so I'll reserve my opinion.
TBH Win7 is a very stable OS, not sure 10 could surpass its predecessor.
