VIII was my first FF, special soft spot for it. Also special mention to Squall. While I had seen brooding, angsty characters in video games, VIII was the first time I had such a character as the main protagonist. (I didn't play VII with its brooding Cloud until way later.)
VI is my favorite for plot. V is my favorite for story.
Waiting for that Dissidia console release.

I played them in release order until 7, which I skipped for a while because I felt betrayed by the filthy polygons (and language), it seemed to me as a 12 year old or whatever that they were selling out to an edgier/mainstream market, or something like that. I eventually played it after X and I was like, eh yeah it's not bad at all.
As in my favorite games post, mine are pretty much IV, VI and Tactics. IV was the first RPG I'd played that had an actual narrative and good story to tell, so it was the first I could attach myself to characters...that makes it more of a subjective favorite. I think VI is objectively just better lol, while Tactics is just too good on its own to not share a spot as well. I also enjoyed FF1 a good bit, my brother still says it's his favorite.
I haven't played much of anything past X, though...just a Lightning Returns demo and um...some of the mobile games. I also haven't really gotten into II and III before, and unfortunately didn't get all that far in V. I was playing that on an emulator and it's tough to get into something that way for me unless I'm already a fan.

Aha!
I began Final Fantasy with VI, which is my favorite. I am fond of V, IV (Complete Collection), the XIII series (yes, I know, it's not that bad. I have to finish LR, btw).
The one that weirded me out was VIII as it was too different. I finished it, yet I can't bring myself to like it, ever.
FF I: I got my butt finally handed to me in the very original on NES -original cartridge, not the NES classic or virtual console or emulator- by Tiamat (with a team of Fighter, Black Mage, White Mage and Monk... why did I choose a Monk?!). Got my revenge in the PSP version which I finished (I didn't try any of the trials, though).
FF II: Finished the PSP version, including the extra story. Learned to like it a fair bit.
FF III: PSP version, obliterated Doga and Unei in one turn each, after much grinding... Looted everything in the Crystal Tower and Eureka. The final level is next. Why are the heroes so squishy, btw?
FF IV: PS1 version completed. PSP version... main story completed, interlude completed. Grinded in the After Years. Postponed.
FF V: PS1 version completed.
FF VI: SNES and PS1 versions completed. I refuse getting the Steam version (poor port).
FF VII: PS1 version completed. Fine game, yet not trippy about it. Crisis Core: Played it until the missiles part. Postponed.
FF VIII: PS1 version completed. I did it for the sake of clearing another one in the series. Meh.
FF IX: PS1 version completed. It was kind of too easy?
FF X+X/2: Just got the remaster version via Steam... Resuming. Tidus is an idiot. ^^
FF XI: Didn't have the chance to play it.
FF XII: I'd love to get it. That said, I wonder why Vaan is so hated (and Penelo too).
FF XIII/XIII-2, LR: Finished XIII and XIII-2. Completed about all quests in LR, except the all-extinction or the Aeronite one. No NG+ yet. Postponed LR.
FF XIV: Didn't have the chance to play it.
FF XV: I don't hope to play it.
Others: FF Tactics: Finished the original as well as the War of the Lions version. Loved it to bits. Ignored the other entries of the series. FF Dissidia Duodecim: Barely played it. Interesting concept, though. FF Chronicles: I am near the end... Got brutalized at the final dungeon... Postponed. FF MQ/MQL: Finished the original on SNES. Mystic Quest: Actually the first Mana game. Finished it too on Gameboy.

I have no favourite, is that okey? I dunno why, but I felt early FF was too slow for me. It felt unnatural to get a menu before choosing attack. This were a time I played much jump and shoot games on Gameboy and Playstation One.
I have seen a whole lot of the latest FF game, due to a stream however. While it felt "cute" it never was anything I could get into (except those noodle ads, yum!). I was also surprised to see that the battle-system was now real-time. Or at least, a bit more like real-time.
But since I am more about action, I would love to see the system being put into use with a Devil May Cry speed, those from the early days. That might make me interested in the FF series. Next up will be Kingdom hearts (that I will watch) Remastered or whats it called. I wonder if that have a story I would enjoy a bit better... Dunno. Will give it a try.

Will give it a try. In the FF XIII series, if you dawdle too much, you will get utterly trashed (especially bosses, that will give you no quarters -I hate you to no end, Barthandelus-). It all happens in real-time. You can also only control one character, the others are managed via paradigms. No more leveling up either, it's all about crystariums in the first two, quests and story-completing in the third. It's sort of fresh, super dynamic, yet very disconcerting. A true love-or-hate thing. I was a ATB fan but I had to adapt. I am fine with it now.

played nearly all of them, only beaten 6 14 and mq (damn you ocd, rereleases, and save issues), favorites though ffmq ff6 ff7 ff9 ff10 ff12 fft ff14, trying to play ff1 ff3 and ff5 but i keep losing my saves cause i think the emulators on my psp are borked
ff8 and ff13 are the only 2 i have a really hard time getting into, ff8 always feels so slow to start and i got wrecked by a dinosaur as my first battle so all that waiting down the drain, and 13 is meh, the battle system feels incredibly random and you have little to no control over whats actually going on, theres almost no exploration or things to actually do or find so it feels like im just walking from cutscene to cutscene (will play again someday when i have someone who likes the game around so i dont get bored easily and switch games), used to hate ff10 but its grown on me cause i like the gameplay (hate whiny bitch mcshortpants though)
cant wait for ff12za ff14sb and ff7r, hoping for something epic being announced in a week

The TCG just came out in the US recently, there's that as well. I was at first bummed that it seemed to be only VII and after for now (and for 2017), but there's a lot of FFT stuff in the boosters as well as a few from older things. Makes me wonder if in 2018 at least there will be FFIV and FFVI starter packs. ...because I mean lol, there's stuff like all the way to Prince Larg for FFT in the booster sets while for VI it's only like Terra and Kefka.

www.novacrystallis.com/2017/02/dissidia-final-fantasys-console-version-will-story-mode/Because they wouldn’t just be satisfied delivering the base arcade version alone, Kujiraoka noted they’re also looking at enthusiasm for e-Sports and the possibility of moving in that direction. “If we can export it to the world as a high-proficiency, competitive fighting tool, while also an enjoyable team battle Final Fantasy, it might even rise up as an e-Sports event,”

I dunno. Square tends to disappoint to a degree when it comes to all their Final Fantasies.
While I enjoy VI the most, with IV, X, then the PSX three. Tactics is with VI as it was a great story.
Outside of those, I would have liked to have Crisis Core on PSN, Agito HD on Vita, or the intended Fabula Nova Crystalis. But oh well...
Didn't play much II or III, but I continue to hope for a VI continuation.
