Today I finished Super Metroid for the first time ever. I got the fair ending and 77% of the items. I can't believe I missed this game as a teenager. I suppose I didn't play it because I figured I needed to play the first Metroid first (but I just skipped it.) The SNES was my all time favorite game console and this is easily one of the best games of the system. Some will swear it is the best by far, I'm sure. For me, there were some times where the platforming and controls for special jumps were just too sloppy for me, and that left me very frustrated at times. That's the only problem I had with it though, as this is an exploration game to top even most Castlevanias. The room designs were interesting, and the various area environments felt like they all belonged in this bizarre planet, yet were unique enough from each other to keep things interesting. The bosses had plenty of surprising moments and that really shined in this game. The difficulty was mildly challenging, and with enough patience for exploration it was perfect for me. There were a couple of places I thought were unfairly hidden for progressing, but the internet helped in those regards. I love the visual design throughout the entire game. Samus' space craft is now one of my favorite ships ever, and I only got to see the front. The soundtrack was unique and fit with the setting incredibly well. I was watching one of Miketendo's videos and he had a great paining of Samus from this game, and it inspired me to finally get around to playing it. Now maybe I can play that fan game everyone's talking about. (I have so many other games to finish right now though...)

I probably beat this game about four times myself, snes version and Zero Mission. It's a very well made game that doesn't really age. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, however, is my favorite Metroid game and I highly recommend playing that trilogy sequentially.

I am so happy you played it! I agree, one of the best SNES games out there. (There is no way to choose a best. But I will say SNES was probably the best system ever) Like you said, the soundtrack is incredible. Listen to it all the time. I still get back to playing it every year. I hope you will start watching speed runs of it (if you haven't already). GDQ always runs it. Grats on the victory, and to all the Metroid fans out there...

The last Metroid from creator Gunpei Yoko... It was a good choice you played it through! It really is a good game, great quality, awesome atmosphere, music, etc.
The SNES really was an excellent console. A lot of great games, never done again (or to the same quality).

Funny, I decided to replay Super Metroid and beat it a day before you posted that, Xombie.
And I've been playing a few Super Metroid hacks the past few days. Hyper Metroid being one of them. Though my personal favorite would have to be Super Metroid Phazon, where you actually play as Dark Samus.

Ahh Metroid....what a beautiful series. SM was my first Metroid since my family owned a SNES. Had like over 20 playthroughs and I'd still play it again if I had time to emulate it. Moved up the line with Prime 1 and 2, got a GBA with Fusion and Zero Mission, Prime 3 came out. I loved the series then, I still love it now. I did skip Hunters because I never liked the controls and I went back to try Metroid 1 and 2: Return of Samus, but I never completed them because 1 was too hard for a under 15 year old LuckPercentSRL and I got bored with 2. To some it may seem a surprise, but I did enjoy Other M. Not its story per say, but the gameplay was pretty solid besides a few bits. Wish the series could come back to life these days. With the whole Fed Force and AM2R being shot down, it hurts my hopes to play a game again by Nintendo. ------------------------------------------------- On another note, anyone catch the Summer Games Done Quick 4 way race of Super Metroid near the end of the marathon? It was super tight and seriously heartpounding for the runners.

I just want a solid classic Metroid instalment. Or faithful 2d (HD?) remake collection of the 4.
Since that Metroid Dread rumor hit hard and bailed, with Retro poking fun with their shootout via scanning if a certain something.
It would just be nice if Nintendo took interest in their own property other than their usual suspects (with their multiple releases close together)... Even ignoring it's anniversary... I expect that from Capcom or Konami but didn't from Nintendo until it happened...

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Mike. My only question for you is, how long did it take you to realize you had to use the power bomb on the glass tank in Maridia in order to progress?

I know this is a Super Metroid thread, but I have an intense urge to just gush about how amazingly immersive and well made the Metroid Prime trilogy is, and how the Wii controls just ups the immersive factor even more, and how the soundtrack is simply godlike, and just flood the thread with videos of it BUT I'll refrain. I'm honestly a bigger Metroid fan than I am a Castlevania fan. Actually Metroid is probably my second most favorite video game franchise of all time... I hope in the near future Metroid will get some kind of super polished immersive VR game. That will be absolutely mind blowing. Just please no more Federation Force.

Nintendo just doesn't care anymore.

It didn't really take all that long. I just kinda figured it would work. The things that hung me up were the things I would do because I knew if I tried 1000 times I could do it, but then later found that an upgrade would have let me do it 1000 time easier.
Jumping around in the sand was frustrating and lead to a dead end until I got the gravity suit. Stuff like that kinda irked me.

It took me an embarrassingly long amount of time before I figured out the power bomb thing. I think it was somewhere around 3-6 months. The only other big hangup happened during my second playthrough. I discovered the bottom of the green area at Brinstar where you have to wall jump before I got the space jump, used the save point there, and then started over because I couldn't get the timing right in order to get out and felt stuck.

Did you know if you charge your beam and then morph into a ball, you release 5 bombs at once? Did you know Samus has a special technique called "Crystal Flash", which recovers your HP to max if you have low HP and have the right amount of ammo? Did you know if you use a two beam combination like Charge+Ice, Charge+Wave, Charge+Spazer, or Charge+Plasma, and then charge up your beam while Power Bombs is selected, you will pull off a unique attack? Did you know none of the other 2D Metroid games has this many options?

I knew of Crystal Flash, just never pulled it off.
But one cool thing about Super, when leaving the planet after killing Mother Brain... Right before you go out the cave, take the down path (where you get missiles), you'll see the apes and bird (that cameo in Fusion).
When the planet blows, if you see them and shoot the wall so they can leave, a shooting star flies from the explosion (just after), if you don't free then or visit them, there is no shooting star.

Did you know the guy who said "The last Metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace..." also did some of the voice clips in Star Fox/Star Wing? Did you know you can electrocute Draygon by using the grapple beam on the uncovered electric panels in his boss arena? Did you know the two most important words in Super Metroid are "Deer Force"?

To put it all out there, Japan has never cared all that much about Metroid, its significantly more popular in America. Americans are the ones who want more Metroid characters in Smash, they're the ones who want more Metroid games and most importantly, Americans were the ones outraged at the character assassination that was Other M. And, well, Nintendo isnt exactly well known for really considering their American Fanbase. I would have been surprised it Nintendo actually HAD done something for Metroid's 25th anniversary. They just never cared that strongly about it.

That may have very well been why the Prime series was handled by a Retro Studios, a western company.

Other M was after Super Metroid. That may have been why. Too big of a gap that let Team Ninja some creative freedom. While also using some elements that 'carried' over to Fusion (development dates make that reversed, but you know what I mean, with Adam and the A.I. For example). So it is a development reason too. Not just a presumed regional development procedure.
Since each Metroid in a sense zeros out for the newest instalment, it applies here.
