I'm not too sure about the addiction/dependency mechanic that Clear mentioned but i do think the idea of food and different food combinations giving (temporary) stat buffs and debuffs is an interesting one, it could add more depth to cooking and food in the game beyond them being a variation on the potion. Dont get me wrong food could be used to heal too it could just have other affects aswell (not always good). Perhaps some foods restore a lot of health but also give a temporary debuff to some core stats, maybe some could heal a smaller amount but give a buff to multiple stats and so on, there are a lot of possibilities. Perhaps certain food combinations give Miriam a stomach ache and so slowly drain health for short time but also have other affects, so much could be done with a system like this on top of having health and Mana potions. Ooohhh yeah food combinations would be good. Like mix noodles with fresh tomatoes and *BAM* you just made pasta! Cool idea. Oh also, I think you spelled mana wrong. It's M-A-N-A, not V-U-S-C. Kids these days and their lack of appreciation for the written word... :p

I'm ok with food being in the game or even finding cooking recipes being able to make better dishes to grant better HP/MP restore or stat buffs but a hunger mechanic would be a gamebreaker for me,its the reason I hated metal gear solid portable ops,you could literally just die in a mission because you did not feed your character for 6 minutes which was ridiculous (Never played that game again)

TL DR everything above this post, but I have a feeling this may be positive. instead of having potions food etc grant an instant health increase, it could be given over a number of seconds. if anyone has played salt and sanctuary or DS2 lifegems, you know what im talking about. I think that would make an excellent way to make the highest difficulty more challenging. The other difficulties could have instant healing but this tweak can allow the developers to add difficulty without massive stat boosts.

this is how its implemented in soulslike games, because there is no instant healing or game pausing.

A hunger system sounds...rather dumb for a game like this. Why not flip the script and allow the consumption of food to create a time limited buff? Eat curry, get 30 seconds of extra damage or something. Assuming something like rotten meat returns, maybe consuming it lowers your HP but gives you x10 attack?

I know it is the common consensus that "hunger" as a game mechanic is bad... but how about hunger and thirst as a status ailment... not something the game itself forces you to do in timed intervals but instead a status ailment that is cast on you by a witch or enemy... I don't know like a famine demon or something.
if the "hunger" is ignored it can become a "starving" ailment... and if it is ignored even more there is a special dying animation for this.

@ JeffCross i dont think this fits very well into an IGAvainia game, (it's really more of a rogue-like thing; think ADoM) but i do think food items could add/remove status effects (positive and negative) depending on what dish they are or which combination of ingredients the player has used to create the food item

m0nkf15h really, I don't see too much of a problem with it... well maybe the advancing ailments, but other than that... but anyways, that part was just a last minute toss in. but yeah the point of the "hunger" status ailment is you cannot get rid of it unless you actually eat some kind of food. but I do agree a status ailment killing you is definitely not igavaina-ish.
