So I had this idea. IGAVania games have always had various food and drinks as items that restore health and MP either by using them in a menu or instantly getting the effect by touching them in game. There are these other games I really like called Muramasa Rebirth and the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games that implement an eating feature but with a twist. What if you had to eat something to fill your belly while you're on your journey to not die from hunger? You could also cook on certain locations using food ingredients and make food or drinks that you could use real time or that you ate at that spot. Or getting certain effects from eating certain food. I realize that perhaps this is adding way too many RPG elements at this point but I feel it's a concept IGA might seriously consider if he thought about about it (maybe he already did for all I know). I really liked the animations and process of eating and cooking food in Muramasa even though it was annoying you had to do it a lot even if you didn't need to to forge blades but I think something similar could work pretty well. It also made me hungry in real life a lot of the times too .

Ehhhhhhhh, with all the "survival" games absolutely saturating the market right now, I can't say I think its a good idea. Just hearing the words "survival elements" is enough to send many into a rage. Even promising games like We Happy Few got absolutely slaughtered for having them.
Also, its worth noting that the standard IGA games don't really take place over extended periods of time. Most, I think, are implied to be the hero storming the castle and kicking Dracula's ass in a single night.
Really, even though I enjoy something like Don't Starve and the genre is bursting atm, I just feel like Bloodstained would actually loose a lot of hype and faith if the team were to shove hunger management on top of the crafting, backtracking and everything else.

I hear what you're saying. Although I don't really know the games you;re talking about and was just thinking about Muramasa and Mystery Dungeon it's true that Castlevania games taking place into the castle aren't suppose to last more than 10 hours or less. I was thinking about OoE more, Curse of Darkness and possibly Lament of Innocence but if the game will primarily be inside the castle then perhaps not. Even within a castle I think it could be interesting depending on the story and how long we're supposed to be in there.

It would be fun to combine foods to make better healing items or stuff for quests akin to the ones found in OoE and PoR, but I agree that it would feel like empty calories in a game with a money-hungry merchant waiting to sell you potions. Too much crafting in an IGAVania of all things would really detract from the meat of the game, that being the combat and exploration gameplay. We've already been promised a lot of prep work when it comes to alchemy recipes, so too much mixing and matching of ingredients means more grinding which would water down the flavor we know and love. I guess as long as it's not half-baked though, cooking could turn out to be a savory addition to the IGAVania formula.

I agree. Not big on the whole survival thing. I mean Bloodstained already has enough elements to cope with as it is. And constantly having to go back to the store to get more items seems tedious and off topic to the classic IGAvanias.
Sorry, just my opinion. :p

saberwolf94 hey man I'm with you, I like the whole cooking thing, though I would like them to somewhat or loosely base them on real recipes. I think it would be cute to see Miriam cooking in the game. imagine her in her apron... she would be a perfect waifu... oh wait she would not be smiling, she does not have those emotions... so maybe not. but it would still be awesome to see her cooking. though I am not into the whole, we HAVE to eat thing, it's just not a castlevania thing... but I am totally down with the cooking animations... they should definitely have that.

The concept of crafting to produce restorative items I can get behind. Other nonsense like hunger mechanics get a hardy HELL NO from me. That stuff is rarely fun and more intrusive than anything. Jim Sterling recently had a video (see below - though its a long one) going over the common pitfalls of the "survival" genre and I can't help mostly agree with him. I'd rather not see these sorts of elements added to Bloodstained. I'm more confident they would reduce fun rather than add to it.

I would propose a cook book, or recipe book that Miriam could write in, when she discovers a new recipe... where she adds little personal notes on some of the pages. I know that is a lot of work but it would be much more interesting to read if it had those little bits in them.

I didn't mind the Bakery in PoR where you whacked the till and a nice slice of cake elevated from the counter I think the only element of cooking/hunger I'd like to see in Bloodstained would be to enter a demonic kitchen where victims have been boiled, spit-roasted or fried to a cinder by a group of nasty cannibal cooks.

I have to argue against this simply due to over complication and an added feature that seems more like it'd be tac'd on than anything to supplement the gameplay thus far.
As a gamer I dislike being interrupted in my anything to be told to eat, or take a break, or NOT do what I intently came to said place to do. Its like a stop sign on a racetrack, kinda defeats the purpose.
What I wouldn't be against in this instance is the food items giving you small timed buffs (and I mean small... not that stuff you see in games like ESO where it sometimes doubles all or some stats. I don't care if it doubles one stat so long as it isn't regular defense or attack but anything else would be obnoxious IMO. )
Also without proper support of items this would be clunky or annoying if you had to enter the menu to use said items.
TL;DR too clunky IMO for an IGA title. Just doesn't fit with the simplicity and elegance of the raw gameplay.

I hear what people are saying but guys I think a lot of you got the idea wrong. It could just be a bunch recepes and a bunch of food items that you combine for better ones etc. Has anyone never played Muramasa Rebirth? It does have the potential to have depth but it can be done pretty simply as well. Also no need to run to the shop all the time it would be stuff like Tasty Meat, food drops that you get from enemies.

Yeah, I don't think the distaste (lol) for hunger elements in survival or roguelike games should overpower and shoot down the idea for cooking as part of the crafting in the game. That's the important thing we're talking about here.
So yeah. Making food sounds great. It's crazy we haven't brought it up/talked about it before. I liked how cooking was done in Dragon's Crown, i.e. there's no actual "need" to do it or a hunger meter, but it was a pretty fun little minigame and gave you some buffs.

If it were just brewing up healing items I'd find that more agreeable, so long as you don't NEED to do it. I think OoE handled it well with Aeon, the village chef. You'd bring him ingredients and he'd give you powerful healing items. It might be a fun little aside/addition to crafting but I'd really start to get worried about feature-creep. There is such a thing as "too many mechanics/systems".

I dont think the game needs a hunger based system in it. If food exists it should be there just as a restorative item or maybe to cure/give status effects, not to fill some arbitrary bar. Does conventional time even pass inside Gebel's castle given that it's a gateway to the infernal dimension? I'm down with the idea of combining foods to produce various dishes that can restore more or have a different affect but not a "survival" aspect.

I don´t like the idea to save miriam from dying of starvation, thats not igavania-like but we have a crafting system, why not using it for crafing meat and rice to curry. The idea of jeffcross with the cook book is fantastic and would fit best for Igavania;)
