I know I said delayed but really they did not give us a release date... so... yeah... It seems Nintendo has scrapped what they have done with Metroid and will be starting over with RetroStudio's help. for more information check the video below.
I know it sucks but not many big studios actually apologies for a delayed game or even tell us if there's something wrong with development... and because of that I highly respect Nintendo for this move.

On one hand, I'm definitely a little disappointed by this news. I was really looking forward to seeing a trailer soon.
However, this announcement says something much more significant: they're taking this project very seriously. As a Metroid fan, that means more than the world to me.
Didn't CAPCOM do something similar to this with Resident Evil 2 back in the day?

It's even quite similar, to me, to Iga's own delay video for our game. Not entirely a restart in our situation, but similar considerations on quality and changing developers.

Reminds me a bit of the issues with FF7's remake. The new work wasn't up to snuff, so they took stock of that fact and decided to pivot in a new direction, bringing things back to origins in a fashion (in-house at Square for FF7, re-associating with Retro for MP4).

Proud of Nintendo keeping the transparency and quality for the Metroid series, now the hard part, waiting until 2022 for the game... sigh.

I can't confirm this, but a senior editor at Game Informer is confidently claiming to have inside info on the cause of the restart and the existence of a now-delayed Metroid Prime Trilogy for Switch. Basically, there was an ad-hoc development going on with different outside teams and not all teams were pulling their weight to put it together. Nintendo wanted to move it in house, and Retro stepped up with a compelling pitch. Meanwhile, Trilogy was supposed to be announced in December, but the announcement was held back, and now it's assumed to be because of this delay on MP4 according to the following: comicbook.com/gaming/2019/01/25/metroid-prime-4-nintendo-switch-delayed-release-date/comicbook.com/gaming/2019/01/25/metroid-prime-4-trilogy-nintendo-switch-release-date/Fascinating, but what a shame. I'm just hoping the reboot will be really ambitious now and not just more of the same. For starters, I really want to see a 3rd-person 3D option beyond Morph Ball and/or Space Jump stuff. And it needs to be pointed out that Retro doesn't have the same people who worked on Metroid Prime stuff anymore. They left, so this will be a new team. Metroid Database reported on those not there anymore: "This includes people like former producer Bryan Walker, game director Mark Pacini, design directors Karl Deckard, Mike Wikan, Lead Artist Todd Keller, and engineering leads Jack Matthews and Andy O’Neil." At this point, I'm wondering if this might be a Breath of the Wild situation where we see some kind of dual release, because we're talking about a 2-3 year delay I'd imagine, and who knows what console life cycles look like going forward. Good news is, this makes Bloodstained all the more valuable on Switch.

RichterB I'd heard that a lot of the folks who originally worked on the Prime trilogy had since left the company, but I didn't know any of the specific names, so thank you for providing that list.

Being fair tho', let's not forget that Retro wasn't hired out of the blue as a nostalgia move, they were hired because of a succesful pitch.
While I understand people worrying that most of the Prime team has left Retro already, let's not forget that Retro has previous experience with both Metroid and Nintendo, and whatever they did, it must've been something at least good, specially since Nintendo isn't specially well known for taking outside pitches all that willy nilly.
Let's just wait and see, is what I'm trying to say. Sure, we're going to wait A LOT, but still.
Plus, in theory, they could always rehire one or two members of the staff if they're currently unemployed. I don't know if that's the case with any -and odds are it isn't- but its still not out of the equation.

Cale As much as those memes make me laugh, and even though I didn't like Other M (didn't hate it, but...); One thing in that game's defense is that Samus can't have expected Ridley to be cloned in the facility (and she certainly didn't expect "MB"). Yes, I know it may be a bit of a stretch, considering how often Samus killed Ridley again and again before the events of Other M (but this isn't the exact same Ridley). At least Samus was "empowered by anger" to fight him?...

Galamoth , in one of the game's early cutscenes, Samus acknowledges to herself that Ridley is almost certainly dead, considering his horribly injured body was left on a planet that had just exploded. If I had a long-standing nemesis who died, and then (while in a dark and lava-filled room) I encountered someone who looked just like him... Well, in the heat of the moment, I'd probably think he just emerged from Hell and that I would never be safe for as long as I live. That's how I've always interpreted that scene. Like you say, it probably wasn't obvious to Samus yet that this Ridley was merely a clone. That's likely the only defense I'll ever offer Other M. Even if it "makes sense" from a certain point of view, it's still a clumsy-as-Heck PTSD scene, and it's emblematic of how far away Yoshio Sakamoto was from his realm of expertise in terms of writing and directing. Of course, Cale , I'm somewhat confused. What aspect of the recent Prime 4 news prompted all of these Other M memes?

I would rather see Retro studios making a new Donkey Kong Country game. Tropical Freeze is excellent.

@autumn Nothing really. I love the Metroid series, was on a meme kick, and Metroid Prime 4 being delayed is a bit of disappointing news, so I thought I would have a laugh at the only Metroid game to make me shake my head.

ReySol It's been about four years since Tropical Freeze was released. I think it's entirely possible that, before they began work on Prime 4, Retro Studios already finished a new game within that period of time. Assuming that's the case, I also hope it's a great new DKC, though the persistent rumors of that weird Star Fox racing game are a little hard to ignore.

Personally, Metroid: Other M was a lot better than people say. It had story problems, but given what we know from Fusion, the end of Metroid II: Return of Samus, and different parts of Super Metroid, Samus is a sentimental/introspective individual. and it therefore wasn't completely, utterly outside the ballpark. What sadly gets overlooked is it had some really strong flashes of what 3rd-person 3D could bring to the franchise, like the Speed Booster/Shine Sparking segments (especially the vertical ones) or the bosses like Vorash and Phantoon. I personally feel, aside from an HD treatment, that the Prime series has sort of reached its limit. Other M was just a little too experimental for its own good in how it couldn't make up its mind about the camera, controls, and game progression. But playing it from start to finish for what it is/was, it's enjoyable and a bit of a breath of fresh air. If you mix Other M with more of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and a better progression sense, you'd really have something I'd be excited about. Samus is too cool and acrobatic to be stuck mostly in 1st person. It opens up a lot of new gameplay and item opportunities in 3rd person.
