So in a show set in Wallachia during 1476/79 one of Dracula's most loyal servants is black. Aside from the total deviation from an original iconic design for no reason (while series designs are followed by every other character more or less) yeah, this surely makes sense. I love Netflix's services and most of their originals but their continuous, inclusive-of-"minorities" agenda is absolutely nauseating. Wallachia at this point in time was right next to the OTTOMAN EMPIRE. Y'know, a Muslim empire, one that was so huge it stretched into Africa, Europe, and even parts of Asia. In the coming years the state of Wallachia even became a vassal state of the Ottomans, so it's completely plausible for African people to be in Wallachia at this point. Heck, look at Dracula's generals and he even has a couple that seem to be Indian and Chinese. I say go for inclusiveness; variety is the spice of life, after all

So in a show set in Wallachia during 1476/79 one of Dracula's most loyal servants is black. That seems like a goofy complaint to have about a show based on a game series with New York-style boxed pizza appearing in 1797 Wallachia, among a long list of other anachronisms (the outfits alone would probably give a historical fashion expert enough material to write a thesis paper). Although, with some people having jokingly pointed out that the Coca-Cola Company existed before the original Dracula novel, I think it would be pretty funny to see some actual product placement in Castlevania one of these days. "I never drink.... wine. I prefer a refreshing soda pop."

Although, with some people having jokingly pointed out that the Coca-Cola Company existed before the original Dracula novel, I think it would be pretty funny to see some actual product placement in Castlevania one of these days. "I never drink.... wine. I prefer a refreshing soda pop." Funnily enough, in the first season they explained some of the anachronisms. After Trevor rescues Sypha he mentions the electric lanterns and indoor plumbing of the underground facility, saying those are things only found in Dracula's domain. And that makes sense, as per lore Dracula was a scholar, so he probably had nothing better to do with his time than run experiments all day. Heck, a tweet by Frederator Studios showed an entry in Lisa's journals confirming she discovered penicillin four hundred years before Alexander Fleming did. And like I said, Dracula having a black guy in his entourage isn't really an anachronism. The Ottoman Empire was next door and considering its scope, a man of African descent being about is completely plausible.

This series so far is pretty grim, aside from Trevor's smugness sometimes, and has none of the series' goofy anachronisms, at least now, bar some fantasy stuff.
I know about the Empire, but I still thought it a bit strange to see African people in an important position in this part of Europe in that particular epoch. I could be wrong though, I don't deny the possibility.
I'm still very much against changing a character with an established design for the sake of inclusiveness. And before people think that it's for racist reasons or something like that, it's for respect of the source material. I had the same gripes against the horrible The Last Airbender movie, where Sokka and Katara were whitewashed despite being from a tribe that in the show was clearly not white, and in general with everything I care about that pulls this kind of move.

Islam predates Vlad the Impaler; it has been in the regions that now constitute modern-day Romania for nearly 1000 years. Heck, Vlad the Impaler's brother even converted. And in canon, Dracula had a thing for people shunned by society, which might include someone like this version of Isaac. And as for inclusiveness: so what? Okay, someone who was once white is now African. Whoop-dee-doo, most of the cast is still clearly pasty white (except for the Speakers, who are clearly modeled after Roma), one black guy isn't going to destroy any sort of artistic integrity. I say if anything we need more inclusiveness. Variety is the spice of life, after all

Islam and the ottoman empire does not equate to African people, but I see that it's fruitless to continue this discussion. As I said I am not that much of a scholar to exclude that such people in important roles existed, so I'll give it to you, but please do not insinuate I do not know history, because I did study it and I know what happened in that period. Thanks.
As for the variety we can agree to disagree I guess. You're not wrong per se but in some instances it still seems puzzling to me.

Today's the day. As we have two threads about the Netflix series on the first page of the General Off Topic forum, I recommend this one, as the thread specific for this season, be spoiler-free (possibly adding an admonition to the thread title).
